Why a library request matters

When a library member asks for a book, the library considers buying a proper catalogued lending copy. That single copy then reaches every reader who borrows it. It costs you nothing except a minute with a form, and for an independent press like ours it is one of the most effective ways a reader can help a book find its audience.

The ISBN is the important line: it lets library staff find the exact edition in their ordering systems.

How to make the request

  1. Online: most UK library services have a "suggest a purchase", "recommend a title" or "suggest a book" form on their website. Search your library service's site for those words and paste in the details above.
  2. At the desk: take the details (or this page on your phone) to any branch and ask to suggest the book for stock. You usually just need your library card.
  3. By email: some library services accept stock suggestions by email; the address is normally on the same page as their catalogue.

Every library service decides its own purchases, so a request is a suggestion rather than an order. Requests from members carry real weight in those decisions.
